Railsea by China Mieville

Railsea - China Mieville

Read by Tiffany: An interesting and off-beat, steampunk sort of world, where instead of oceans of water, there are swathes of Railsea - snarls and myriad strands of railroad track on top of earth teeming with burrowing, carnivorous life. The constant use of ampersands annoyed me greatly in the early chapters, however this is explained in chapter 33 (p143) as a device of the writer, indicating the language of the world uses ‘&’ instead of 'and' because it twists and turns on itself like the rails. The writing has an unusual tone - conversational with the reader in places, casual and colloquial primarily. Main theme is finding your direction in life and following it through.
